I'm definitely more of an alla prima painter but it's really really good to do a layered painting now and again.  So here are some shots of this still life so far that I started with a value only underpainting.  It is taking a lot of restraint on my part to do this and that discipline is so important.  It makes you really think and see values and how they make form when you are not distracted by color.  I used transparent oxide brown and ultramarine blue and titanium white.  Last photo has only the slightest glaze of (yes) lemon yellow and TOB and TW on the egg.  And truthfully it was just to scratch the color itch temporarily.
